(Anchorage, AK<\/em>) \u201cContinuous,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0a series of portraits, features the work of #Two-Spirit<\/a> artist Jenny Irene Miller (Inupiaq<\/em>). This exhibit is a collection photographs of 17 individuals who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and\/or Two-Spirit and Alaska Native. This show explores identity, sexual orientation, gender diversity, discrimination, and pride and how these elements overlap, diverge, and inform each other.<\/p>\n

The Alaska Humanities Forum<\/a> (AHF) will exhibit “Continuous<\/em>” from January 13 to February 7, 2017. There is going to be an opening reception at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, January 13, 2017 at the AHF offices<\/a>, 161 E. First Ave., door 15 with an “open dialogue\/artist talk” with the Ms. Miller at 6:30 p.m.<\/p>\n

Jenny Irene Miller, whose Inupiaq name is Wiaga\u00f1miu, is originally from Nome, Alaska and studied at the University of Washington in Seattle, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photomedia and Bachelor of Arts in American Indian Studies. She currently work in public relations in Anchorage and is a photographer, who also works in video and sound\/noise art. Much of her work focuses on identity and awareness and is passionate about exploring the space between and within, where art intersects and connects with advocacy work.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis work is personal and communal\u201d said Ms. Miller, \u201c\u2019<\/em>Continuous\u2019<\/em> started by looking at my own identity. I took a course on gender and sexuality while I was attending the University of Washington, and I wrote a paper on my own lived experience. This paper and course helped me work through the stigma about being non-heterosexual as well as way to deal with my own internalized fear of my sexuality. What I found most helpful were the readings from and by Two-Spirit people. Through these Two-Spirit writers, I not only saw myself, but I was saw the importance of and for role models. Also, what help me was the local LGBTQ community, I surrounded myself with, and of course my mother’s acceptance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis show brings forth, highlights and features the diversity and beauty of the local Two-Spirit community,\u201d Ms. Miller continues. \u201cIt is my hope this exhibit provides a visible representative and roles models my lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and\/or Two-Spirit Alaska Native community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms. Miller is also one of the leader organizers of Anchorage\u2019s local Two-Spirit organization, Aurora Pride. This group meets bi-monthly and provides a safe, welcoming and affirming space and place for the Alaska Two-Spirit community.
